In the photo, from left to right on the steps of the hall are old Benedictine Wolfe (Sales Manager Chicago Cardinals, now the Arizona Cardinals), George Halas (coach and owner of the Chicago Bears), Harold “Red “Grange (assistant coach of the Chicago Bears, having retired from his career in 1935), and Clarence Bidwell (owner of the Chicago Cardinals). Two lucky students are standing in the background. This photo was taken in mid-May 1937, during the campus “May Day” annual festival. Robert Mastny, O.S.B. had a special connection with football in Chicago and was the one who was invited to speak. According to the campus newspaper, both Halas and Grange “delighted the crowd with their humor whit nice. Halas recalled some funny events in the management team and insisted on the basis of money gratis to subsidize sports in larger universities. Grange praised because of the unsung heroes of the gridiron-submarine and the ten men that make life easier for the ball carrier. “Legend has it that Halas is intended to establish the Bears’ summer training camp here at Benedictine Abbey but protested that it would be too much of a distraction. Lisle would certainly be a different place today if the decision had been made otherwise!
