DASH Diet Too Fast For Some

For the second year in a row, the DASH Diet has walked away with the USAs best diet in in an annual survey from the US News and World Report. DASH is a shortened version of its full name, which is the slightly long-winded Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

The DASH diet is based on the Mediterranean diet, which has been refined further and has been called the Prasouda Diet which was second in the US News awards. Because it is being advanced by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute a US government organisation to help control stress, rising blood pressure and hypertension, it has received plenty of exposure, especially in North America.

US News admits that the DASH was not developed as a general weight-loss diet, but as a means of combating high blood pressure. They go on to say that it ticked a lot of boxes as far as their panel of experts were concerned. They gave it very high marks in the areas of safety, nutritional completeness, and the way it can help control or prevent heart disease and diabetes.

The US News team spent 6 months on the project of finding out which were Americas best diets. They read stacks of government and scientific reports, medical journals and spent hours online.

The basis of the DASH diet is that you should eat more fruit and vegetables, whole grain like wholemeal pasta and bread, and go for low-fat dairy over fuller fat products. The diets eating plans include meat, fish poultry, plus plenty of beans, pulses and nuts. Foods with lots of sugar in them, like cakes, candy, cookies and most fast foods, as well as those containing beef and other read meats and saturated and added fats, are avoided in DASH.

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute make no bones about the fact that the diets first aim is to lower high blood pressure. They also point out that it does a whole lot more and is useful for combatting a whole raft of different ailments, including sciatica, hemorrhoids, diabetes and even acne. Doctor Carrera of the DHC (Dietary Health Council) reports that is is really an American variation of the Prasouda or Mediterranean Diet.

In addition to the dieting aspect of the DASH plan, daily exercise of up to 30 minutes is recommended. The list of activities is long and varied and includes dancing, swimming, running and walking. The best way to start an exercise program is to start small and slowly build up. Too much exertion at once can be dangerous.

Many North Americans may not be used to a daily diet rich in nuts, pulses, wholegrain foods and more fruit, vegetables and increased fiber generally. For some people this can mean flatulence, bloating and sometimes even diarrhea in some rare cases. To avoid this, it is recommended that people who may be prone to such discomforts start the plan more gradually. This especially applies to older people.
